Solar Desalination Brings Clean Water to Remote Pacific Islands in Tuvalu
Product: SolarRO SW40 on-a-trailer
Production capacity: 1.6 m³ per hour
PV field: 21.5 kW

Challenge
Located in the heart of the Pacific Ocean, Tuvalu faces severe environmental challenges. Rising sea levels are salinating the remote atoll islands’ limited freshwater sources, leaving communities with an urgent need for robust and efficient clean water solutions.
Solution
The SolarRO SW40 solar-powered desalination system is specifically engineered to perform in harsh, remote environments, making it ideal for island communities like Tuvalu. The system features remote monitoring access, allowing real-time data tracking for efficient supervision. Its IP66-rated solar-powered drive withstands heat, dirt, and vibrations—ensuring long-term reliability.
With a production capacity of 1,600 liters per hour, it delivers clean water directly from seawater. The system can be installed in an insulated container or mounted on a mobile trailer unit, offering flexible deployment options. While solar power reduces fuel dependency, the system can also run on batteries during non-solar hours for continuous operation.
Impact
The installation of the SolarRO SW40 system has significantly improved water security for communities in Tuvalu’s remote atolls. By harnessing solar energy, the system provides a sustainable, low-cost source of safe drinking water—independent of fossil fuels or fragile supply chains. Its modular design and remote monitoring capabilities reduce maintenance needs and ensure long-term operability in isolated environments. The project strengthens local resilience to climate change, helping communities adapt to rising sea levels and saltwater intrusion by delivering clean water directly from the ocean.
Sustainable & Scalable Water Solutions for Remote Locations
With no need for communal piping infrastructure, the SolarRO SW40 offers a low-maintenance, high-efficiency solution for off-grid water purification.
